Yale Tutors is a premier tutoring firm which began life in New York City in 2002 as a small group of academic subject and test prep tutors who enjoyed and were dedicated to tutoring. We’ve since grown and now serve the greater New York City, Los Angeles, Boston, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Washington DC areas. We have no affiliation with Yale University. We remain tutor-run and every one of us is a committed learner and teacher. We work with students of all ages and levels in test prep, academic subjects, and enrichment learning.
When we began, we were unsatisfied with existing test prep methods which was reinforced by the introduction of the new SAT in 2005 which obviated many existing methods leading test prep vendors promoted. Through our experience and success in preparing students as well as our knowledge of other approaches and their failings, we’ve developed our own proprietary methods, approach and materials for SAT prep. Our approach has carried over successfully to several other tests and entrance exams as we annually prepare students for many exams beyond the SAT including the GRE, GMAT and LSAT.
More than Test Prep. We’ve tutored students in most academic subjects including math, writing, physics, chemistry and the humanities. Knowledge is one of the few beautiful things in the world, and we’re very lucky and happy that we’re able to share it through academic subject tutoring. We hire only the best teachers. With Yale Tutors, you don’t work with a good tutor; you work with a great tutor. We charge fair, simple rates to accommodate every motivated student so that we can concentrate on what we love to do-teach!
We Care About Being the Best
We look for bright, naturally talented tutors who are subject-area experts or gifted test-takers and we make them better.
For our SAT tutors, we hire tutors who are themselves 99th percentile scorers and can ace every section of the test (we give them a sample SAT test to insure that). We then put them through a 12 hour training program with another test at the end to insure mastery of our teaching techniques. It’s one thing to be able to ace a test; it’s another to teach others how to ace it and the key to bridging that gap is the Yale Tutors test prep methodology/approach.
We also audit tutoring sessions, and we will on occasion assign homework to our tutors!
A Genuine and Personalized Service: We Support Our Tutors
Most tutoring firms will assign a tutor a student and then wish them good luck – their interaction with the student beyond soliciting more business stops there.
We’re the opposite. We almost never solicit business from past clients – we stay “plenty busy” with our old clients contacting us on their own. We also keep track of student progress and what and how the tutor is running sessions throughout the time anyone works with us. With any new client, a principal or coordinator will work with the tutor and student/parent(s) to create a plan of preparation or instruction based on the student’s needs and goals.
If there are any problems, being tutors ourselves, we’ll recommend materials and approaches to our tutors. Our tutors are never alone. We have tutors in the same subject connect to share teaching techniques; as a group, we have a trove of knowledge as to how to teach topics and tests in all sorts of subjects from our past history (which we of course share with tutors before they take on a new student).
We want every student to achieve his or her goals, and we have a bad conscience over any student who comes to us and doesn’t. At Yale Tutors, we provide a genuine service. We try our best and that’s evident to our clients.
Proprietary Test Prep Approach for the SAT and other Standardized Tests
We’ve developed our own test prep methods and methodology for the SAT over the past seven years after being deeply unsatisfied with existing SAT prep techniques that just weren’t useful nor relevant for the new SAT. We’ve since applied much of our approach to SAT prep to other tests including the ACT, GRE, GMAT, LSAT, ERB, SSAT & more.
Pay for Great Tutoring, Not a Brand Name
We have to our knowledge the most fair pay structure for tutors of any premium tutoring firm in the areas we serve. For the same billable rate, a tutor will earn more than double tutoring with Yale Tutors than she would tutoring with Kaplan or the Princeton Review or any other “brand-name” driven firm. Those companies have high-turnover built into their business models – they’d rather pay less and suffer higher turnover among tutors.
Yale Tutors works differently. We look for tutors to stay with us for a long, long time – we don’t want superb tutors to leave us. We expect a lot from our tutors and reciprocate by compensating our tutors both very well and very fairly.
Flexible, In-Home Tutoring with Constant Support
We offer flexible scheduling. We’ll generally come to meet your son or daughter in your home – to save you from another trip in what we’re sure is a busy schedule.
We do our best to support our students all the time, even outside formal tutoring sessions. A coordinator will always be available to discuss any issues at almost any time. We (tutors and particularly coordinators) are available out-of-session for our students via e-mail, phone as well of course for emergency in-person sessions. We expect our students to work hard, and we’re there to support them as they do.
Since 2000, Yale Tutors has been providing tutoring services to students of all ages, levels and abilities. We are a dedicated and results-driven premier tutoring group currently serving the greater New York City, Los Angeles, Boston, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Washington DC areas.
We specialise in SAT test prep tutoring, for which we have developed our own proprietary methods and materials. We also have extensive experience tutoring other standardized tests such as the GRE, GMAT, and LSAT.
Yale Tutors also has many brilliant academic subject tutors (in math, writing, chemistry, physics, & much more) who work with students of any age and any level from pre-K through post-college.

Case Studies: Short and Long Term Engagements
Here are the stories of two of our past students (names changed). Whether you want a long-term partner in your child’s education or you need a tutor for a difficult class just for now, we can work with you. We should add that we can’t take much credit for the success of either student–both worked very hard and were naturally brilliant kids. We can take credit for being there to guide and support them (they’re still kids after all), and this, we feel, helped them achieve their best.
Short-term Test Prep Case Study: Jack.
Jack called us in late March, a month before he was scheduled to take the SAT I exam in May. His family had a limited budget, and there was also limited time (4 weeks) before the exam. We worked with him for an aggregate of 8 hours–a 2-hour session every week covering all three sections of the SAT intensely. Based on his March test results, Jack did equally well in all three SAT sections so we didn’t bias preparation for any particular section. Jack followed-up each session with six hours of homework on his own (four hours doing a practice test and two hours of additional problem sets). He worked very hard and called his tutor during the weekend (outside of sessions) for guidance as to math problems they weren’t able to cover during the session and which he just couldn’t get on his own (Jack was dedicated; so were we). Results: 50 point improvement in the math section, 60 point improvement in critical reading and a 60 point improvement in the writing section for an aggregate of a 170 point improvement over his score in March.
Long-Term High School Tutoring/College Preparation Case Study: Jill.
We began working with Jill when she entered high school in the 9th grade and continued working with her through her graduation in the 12th grade. She was bright and motivated, and hoped to attend a competitive college. Academically, she worked with us consistently in writing and in other subjects only when she had difficulties. In chemistry, for example, we had only one or two sessions with her which almost miraculously turned Jill’s situation around. After a tutor brought clarity to some of the general ideas of chemistry, chemistry began to make sense to Jill and her average improved from a C to a B+ by term end. We worked with her intensely over all four years on her writing skills, essay preparation in general, and specifically revising and editing just about each of her papers for her english and social science courses.
She achieved a 90 or better average in just about every class with a 95 or better in most classes. We developed a test-taking schedule with her, and tutors worked with her to insure full preparation for the SAT I and SAT Subject tests. She scored 700 or over on every section of the SAT I and on every SAT Subject test. Lastly, we worked with her on her college essays. She came to us with essays she had labored over during the summer before her senior year in high school. We felt that these initial essays didn’t represent her best writing and requested she write more. She, hesitantly, complied (she was rather attached the first essay she wrote). She eventually produced what we considered to be two exceptional essays, one about a travel experience and another about one of her activities. Outside of her academic work, she participated in dance and medical research throughout high school and was an author of a published medical paper. Results: Extremely successful high school education. Accepted early decision to Harvard; Accepted regular decision to Yale and Michigan.
